3D Breast Tomosynthesis

Ground Breaking Technology for Breast Cancer Detection

3D Breast Tomosynthesis

WHAT IS 3D TOMOSYNTHESIS?

Digital 3D Breast Tomosynthesis is a new and innovative FDA-approved technology that helps physicians detect breast cancer earlier than standard mammography. Using an x-ray tube that moves in an arc around the patient’s breast, images are taken from multiple angles, while computer processing is used to build these “slices” into a three-dimensional image. Radiologists can then manipulate and scroll through to examine each slice individually, reducing or eliminating problems caused by overlapping or dense tissue.  The 3D imaging technology, through these enhanced images, will help physicians detect smaller tumors sooner and allows better screening for women with dense breast tissue.

WHO SHOULD HAVE A 3D MAMMOGRAM?

Women of all ages are at risk of getting breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends women start monthly breast self-exams in their 20’s and yearly mammograms at age 40. Women under age 40 with either a family history of breast cancer or other concerns about their personal risk factors should talk to their healthcare provider about when to start and how often to have a mammogram. A mammogram can find cancer even when it’s very small, often several years before a woman or her doctor would be able to feel it.

Dense breast tissue can mask small lumps or tumors as the tissue appears as the same color as lumps on mammograms.  Breasts with a higher percentage of tissue than fat are considered dense.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF 3D BREAST TOMOSYNTHESIS?

The benefits of 3D Breast Tomosynthesis are:

Earlier detection:  Standard mammograms provide an image of the entire breast which can cause overlapping tissue to obscure abnormalities.  With 3D Breast Tomosynthesis, the images can be examined individually, meaning that cancers may be detected earlier than standard mammography.

Better visualization: Standard mammograms can flatten and distort abnormalities.  With 3D Breast Tomosynthesis, radiologists better see the size, shape and location of an abnormality.

Fewer callbacks: 3D Breast Tomosynthesis can help distinguish harmless abnormalities from real tumors, which leads to fewer callbacks for additional views and less anxiety for women.

DOES 3D REPLACE STANDARD 2D MAMMOGRAMS?

No – 3D Breast Tomosynthesis is performed in conjunction with a standard 2D mammogram.

WHAT IS THE COST?

The 2D portion of the exam will be billed to insurance as it has in the past, but the 3D Breast Tomosynthesis is currently not covered by insurance. Patients electing to add the 3D portion to their standard mammogram will be charged an additional nominal fee of $50

IS A PHYSICIAN REFERRAL NECESSARY?

3D Breast Tomosynthesis will be available to patients who are due for their yearly screening mammogram.  No physician referral is necessary for a standard screening mammogram nor breast tomosynthesis.

WHEN WILL IT BE AVAILABLE?

The technology will be available at Nix Health starting Summer 2012.
